What Would I Be Without My Things, 2024

"What would I be without my things?" is about tangibility, who we are, and what we choose. The constant search for the right shade of red, the person who sounds like that one song, and the culture that's cooler than this.
This exhibition consists of four film photographs and four oil paintings: With direct reference to their favourite movie, shoes, and wired headphones, Abigail and Emily Doyle aim to capture their things in a multitude of senses. Each piece demonstrates the idea of wanting and having, such as the non-tangible conversations heard through podcasts we enjoy, even when vapid and frivolous. Or the clothes we wear daily and cherish as though they're art pieces. Even the ideals we dream of, the futures we'll have. Without these simple things, we'd be completely lost. When we don't believe in a god, we turn to objects, desires, and our personas. Asking the question, what would we be without our things?

You're a direct result of what I've seen.

One shouldn't work on a day like this.

I can and will express myself.
A black and white photograph shows a person's hands resting on their lap, with the right hand holding a smartphone. The person is wearing a dark outfit and seated near a wooden dining chair with spindles, and a smartphone is propped up on the chair's armrest, capturing a mirror image of the scene.
